In-Depth Investigation

Investigating the Truth Behind the Closure of the Package Storage Station at the Communication University of China

In 2021, the package storage station in the female dormitory area of the Communication University of China was suddenly closed, causing all packages to be stored at a distant temporary station outside the university. This created significant inconvenience for female students, some of whom also faced unprovoked attacks off-campus, further fueling discontent.

Rumors spread that the university president intended to establish a new station for personal profit. To explore whether the rumors were true, my classmates and I conducted an investigation. We interviewed the attacked students and school officials and conducted undercover visits to other package storage stations around campus.

We discovered that the rumors were false. The university had identified price gouging at the original station and selected a new service through an open bidding process. Our interview footage (released with permission) and the public bidding data were published on the university’s official website, eventually clarifying the incident.

Investigating Urban Villages in Beijing

Urban villages refer to traditional rural areas that remain within urban regions and are gradually being redeveloped during the process of urbanization.
Just a 10-minute drive from Beijing’s CBD, Guo Mao, there exists such an urban village. To explore whether these urban villages are as dilapidated as they are depicted online, I led a film crew on a three-week investigation of three different urban villages. To our surprise, we found that most of these urban villages are well-governed, with convenient transportation, comprehensive retail and service facilities, clean streets, and well-mannered residents. This discovery challenges the common stereotypes about urban villages.

A Documentary about Traditional Sanitation Workers in Modern Beijing

In the ancient yet modern city of Beijing, while garbage trucks efficiently work the main roads, an elderly man known as “Lao Man” rides a tricycle through the narrow hutongs, ringing a large copper bell. For over eight years, he has maintained the habit of ringing his bell to remind residents to dispose of their trash, becoming a cherished sound in the hutongs of the Xicheng district.

A News Report on Digital Technology’s Impact on Art’s New Lifespan

To explore how digital technology reshapes the creation and distribution of art, my teammates and I interviewed several experts in the art field. These included Richard McCoy, a Melbourne-based New Zealand digital artist; the award-winning Dutch trio SMACK, consisting of digital artists Ton Meijdam, Thom Snels, and Béla Zsigmond; and Dr. Jasmin Pfefferkorn, a postdoctoral researcher from the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne.

Perspective

Dressing Freedom

I started a project with a clothing store in Beijing that invited customers to choose gender-neutral clothing for our subject, a young man who values freedom of dress. The chosen outfits are then tried on and showcased in the store. This entire process was filmed and made into a documentary to spread the perspective of dressing freely.
